Your Daily Happy Chemicals

Understanding the chemicals in our brain is the first step toward improving our mental well-being. At Thrive Beyond Trauma Counseling, we believe that small, intentional actions can make a massive difference in how you feel each day. Here is a guide to your “happy chemicals,” how they affect you, and how you can boost them naturally.

Oxytocin

Known as the “Cuddle/Love hormone,” this chemical plays a vital role in our lives. The feeling of trust it provides motivates you to build and sustain relationships.

  • How Deficiency Affects You: Feeling lonely, stressed, feeling disconnected, low fatigue, insomnia, and feeling anxious.
  • How to Increase: Physical touch, socializing, massage, acupuncture, listening to music, exercise, cold showers, and meditation.

Endorphins

Endorphins release a brief euphoria to mask physical pain. They act as a response to pain and stress that alleviates anxiety and depression.

  • How Deficiency Affects You: Anxiety, depression, mood swings, aches and pain, insomnia, and impulsive behavior.
  • How to Increase: Laughter, eat chocolate, eat spicy food, stretching, massage, and meditate.

Serotonin

Serotonin is responsible for helping you feel significant among your peers and fostering a calm form of accepting yourself with the people around you.

  • How Deficiency Affects You: Low self-esteem, feeling overly sensitive, panic attacks, mood swings, feeling hopeless, social phobia, obsession, and insomnia.
  • How to Increase: Sunlight, massage, exercise, and cold showers.

Dopamine

Dopamine enables motivation, learning, and pleasure. It gives you the determination to accomplish goals, desires, and needs.

  • How Deficiency Affects You: Procrastination, low self-esteem, lack of motivation, low energy, inability to focus, feeling anxious, feeling hopeless, and mood swings.
  • How to Increase: Meditate, create a daily to-do list, exercise, and create something.

At Thrive Beyond Trauma Counseling, we are here to support you in navigating these complex feelings and helping you build a life that feels balanced and fulfilling.
