Fear To Dare

Often, the biggest barrier between where we are and where we want to be is the cycle of fear. We get stuck in patterns that feel safe but keep us stagnant. By understanding the dynamics of living in fear versus the potential of living in “DARE,” we can begin to break those cycles and move toward a more meaningful life.

From Living In Fear

When we live in fear, we often fall into a cycle that traps our potential. This cycle is defined by:

  • Fusion with unhelpful thoughts: These are the thoughts that you get caught up in, believing they are absolute truths rather than just passing mental events.
  • Excessive goals: We set goals that are simply too big, or we approach them when we lack the necessary skills or resources, setting ourselves up for discouragement.
  • Avoidance of discomfort: We become unwilling to make room for the natural discomfort that challenges and growth bring, which leads us to shrink our worlds.
  • Remoteness from values: We end up forgetting what is truly important or meaningful to us, acting instead on anxiety and habit.

To Living In Dare

The alternative to the FEAR cycle is the DARE framework. By shifting our perspective, we can transform our relationship with our thoughts and actions:

  • Defusion: This is the practice of defusing from your thoughts. You learn to observe them without being controlled by them.
  • Acceptance of discomfort: Instead of avoiding, you make space for uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, recognizing them as a natural part of the human experience.
  • Realistic goals: You focus on what you can do with what you have, right where you are. Progress is built on small, achievable steps.
  • Embracing values: You consistently ask yourself, “What is important or meaningful about this action? Does it matter? If so, why?” Connecting to your “why” provides the motivation to keep moving forward.
