Our thoughts are often shaped by our beliefs, which are based on our experiences: some of which can go back as far as our childhood. Core beliefs are therefore deeply rooted inside us, and we might not even be aware of them. The Downward Arrow Technique allows us to access these core beliefs. It can be a great self-help tool for anyone wanting to change their negative thinking and beliefs. To identify your core belief, start with the thought that is currently overwhelming or worrying you, and then ask yourself open-ended questions to delve deeper until you reach the thought that underpins your thinking.
How It Works
The downward arrow technique helps you explore the deeper layers of your thoughts. A therapist will typically ask open-ended questions like, “What does that mean to you?” or “If that were true, what would it imply?” With each answer, you’ll uncover new insights, eventually reaching a core belief. Once identified, this belief can be challenged and restructured, guiding you toward healthier thinking patterns.
Understanding Core Beliefs
To visualize how this works, consider this common progression:
Thought: “I can’t do this exercise.”
Question: “What does it say about me?”
Answer: “That I am not good at it.”
Question: “If that were true, what does it mean?”
Answer: “That I can never do anything right.”
Question: “If that were true, what does that mean?”
Answer: “That I am a failure.”
Question: “If that were true, what does it say about me?”
Answer: “I am stupid.”
Core belief: I am stupid.
